Memoir, typescript, briefly describing his early life and discussing in detail his Civil War experiences and later army service through his arrival in California during the Modoc War in 1873. The memoir contains brief annotations and is dated May 1, 1897, in manuscript. Related papers are a TLS, New York City, to Captain Marcus P. Miller, Headquarters, Battery M, Fourth U. S. Artillery, Lava Beds, Apr 22, 1873, containing a report on actions of Battery M on April 15-17, 1873, in the Modoc War; and an autograph manuscript summary, undated, of the events of the Modoc War, including an account of the death of General Edward Richard Sprigg Canby during negotiations with Captain Jack, chief of the Modoc Indians.

Charles Beaujoilais Throckmorton was born in 1842 in Virginia and was educated in Washington, D. C. He was an officer in the United States 4th Artillery, serving in the Civil War, mostly in the West, and later in the Modoc, Nez PerceĢ, and other Indian wars. Major Throckmorton retired in 1894; he served as assistant general superintendent, department of street cleaning, in New York City, 1894-1895. Canby was born in Piatt's Landing, Kentucky, to Israel T. and Elizabeth (Piatt) Canby. He attended Wabash College, but transferred to the United States Military Academy, from which he graduated in 1839. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 2nd U.S. Infantry and served as the regimental adjutant.
